About the event
September is peak kiwi breeding season, with adults incubating eggs and early chicks beginning to emerge. It's a critical time to ensure our dogs know to avoid kiwi.
Whether you're a local resident, lifestyle block owner, hunter, tramper, or simply enjoy walking your dog outdoors, Kiwi Avoidance Training (KAT) is an easy way to help protect one of Aotearoa's most treasured native birds.
Each dog takes part in a 10-minute training session, where our experienced trainer uses a specialised e-collar to safely teach them to recognise and avoid kiwi scent. It's a simple lesson that could make a lifesaving difference.
Remember: Kiwi Avoidance Training is an additional safeguard, not a guarantee. Dogs should always be kept on a lead in known kiwi habitat, particularly during spring when kiwi are nesting and raising young.
