Keith Hawkins was involved in the management of the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve from 1992 to 2013. Also, a keen recreational diver and angler, his interests and research led him to become intimately familiar the people and history of New Zealand’s most renowned marine reserve.

Our popular winter talks are taking place again this year on the 1st Thursday of each month - these are held at the Southgate meeting room upstairs of the Warkworth Hotel at 7:00pm.

It is many years since the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, perhaps with the most bio-diverse assemblage of marine organisms in New Zealand, was created. Keith in his book "The Poor Knights Marine Reserve, The protection of a unique marine environment" published 2019 details of the struggle for protection of the area that became the focus of a national campaign during the early 1970s.
