On 30 March 2025, more than 115 passionate individuals came together for Connect & Inspire 2025—a day packed with fresh perspectives, powerful stories, and meaningful connections. Whether you were there to listen, learn, share, or support, we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who made this event such a memorable success.

Speaker Highlights

Our line-up of incredible speakers brought a wealth of knowledge and heart to the day. Here's a snapshot of the inspiration they shared:

Dr Lee Shapiro – Boffa Miskell

Dr Shapiro took us on The Research Rollercoaster, sharing the ups and downs of environmental research and the often slow path from innovation to impact. He reminded us that while some tools remain underutilised, others have already begun to shift the dial—and our collective mahi continues to play a critical role in driving progress.

Hannah Giess – HEB Construction

Hannah unpacked the challenges of fast-paced infrastructure development and its environmental footprint. She emphasised practical measures like sediment control, species relocation, and restorative native planting to soften the impact—and highlighted how thoughtful planning can help balance development with care for our ecosystems.

Jason Maguiness – Tāhuna Ora | Coastal Restoration Trust of NZ

Jason took us to the coast, sharing the story of Aotearoa’s fragile sand dune systems and the increasing pressure they face. His talk made a strong case for working with nature—not against it—by prioritising natural defences like dune restoration over engineered solutions such as seawalls. He also championed the power of local Coast Care groups in protecting these vital environments.

Steve Hathaway – Young Ocean Explorers

With 93% of New Zealand covered by ocean, Steve delivered an emotional and eye-opening presentation on our marine world. He spoke about the importance of engaging young people in ocean conservation and the urgent responsibility we all share in protecting marine life for future generations. His storytelling connected deeply with the audience, leaving many visibly moved.

Dean Baigent-Mercer – Forest & Bird

Dean shared stories of Aotearoa’s lost ecosystems and the seabirds that once shaped our native forests. He reflected on the impacts of introduced pests and climate change, highlighting the need for urgent action to restore biodiversity. From pest control strategies to a gardening tip involving blood and bone for puriri trees, his talk was both sobering and practical.

Acknowledgements & Gratitude

A huge thank you to those who helped bring this day to life:

  • Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust – Delma and Wiremu, for opening our day with warmth, intention, and a strong sense of purpose.

  • Auckland Council, for generously supporting the event through funding.

  • Matakana School, for hosting us in such a welcoming venue.

  • Our wonderful volunteers and supporters, whose behind-the-scenes mahi made everything run smoothly—from setup to pack-down.

Looking Ahead

The feedback from Connect & Inspire 2025 has been overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees leaving uplifted and energised to continue their environmental journey. We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year—with new stories, new connections, and even more inspiration.

Until then, thank you for being part of this incredible community. Keep up the great mahi!
