Tamaki Taiao Alliance

A new regional initiative, the Tamaki Taiao Alliance (TTA), has recently been

announced. This prompted questions from RRE members seeking clarity on the

alliance’s objectives and its potential implications for local environmental groups,

particularly in relation to funding competition.

As a result, we have reached out to the key alliance partners, Auckland Council and the Sustainable Business Network (SBN), and had follow up discussions and a face-to-face meeting to better understand the proposition.

The following are some bullet points resulting from our investigation:

  • The current form of the TTA is for a three-year trial of the project across the

    Auckland region

  • It involves a range of significant landscape scale programmes within the trial

group, most of which had been funded previously by Jobs for Nature

  • The overall fundraising goal is $3m over the three years, with an annual target of $1m to distribute to programmes. Our understanding is that this may be in actual funds or by contributions of time and energy (such as hosting corporate volunteer days)

  • Both Council and the SBN have confirmed that none of the alliance funding

will be sourced or sought from the general funding pools our local groups

depend on, such as the RENH grants or the Rodney Local Board. Foundation

North is an alliance sponsor and has provided some seed capital alongside

    Council.

  • Outside of the formal alliance there are opportunities for RRE to collaborate to our mutual benefit, and we will look into these on an ongoing basis.

Two of the initial TTA partners operate within the RRE rohe: Te Hōtaka kia Riha

kore ki Kawau (Pest Free Kawau) and The Forest Bridge Trust. No additional

partners will be sought during the trial period. At this juncture RRE does not have a formal relationship with the SBN but our interactions with the SBN team are always very rewarding and we will continue to keep all opportunities for collaboration at the forefront of our mahi.
